Do you get overwhelmed when you sit down and start to organize your yarn stash? It is hard to know where to start so we are going to have a fun Stash Organization Challenge! We will help you get your space in tip top shape one week at a time.  We will host a yarn swap at the shop and at the end of this challenge there will be a prize for the most organized space!

To take part in this challenge you need to:
  • visit the Knit-Bit's blog weekly & perform the given tasks
  • join in the discussions by posting comments
  • email before & after pictures (during photos if you would like)
  • take part in the before & after vote
Week One Challenge
  1. Create a list of what works and doesn't work about your current storage solutions. (Include things like: yarn, needles, hooks, notions, patterns, etc.)
  2. Think about how you keep track of your yarn and work in progress (WIP's). Think about where you store them, where do you currently keep your knitting/crochet supplies; are they all in one room/space or scattered about the house?
  3. Think of where you would like to store your stash, projects, notions, etc.
  4. Take a picture of your stash as it is and email it to us (please let us know if you wish your photo to be posted anonymously).
  5. In the comments below please tell us your biggest organizational challenge and your best storage solution.
Like this on Facebook and get a friend in on our challenge!

Hello everyone! I hope you have fun with this project, I know I will! I can't wait to get all my stuff organized so I know where it is and what all I have.

My Favorite current storage solution at the moment is my notions case. I bought it at Michael's in the jewelry section. It holds all of my stitch markers, highlighters, tape measure and even the cables for my cirs. The only thing missing is a place for my needles.

My biggest challenge is going to be figuring out what all the yarn I have and the remaining yardage as I was given quite a bit, most without labels.

I put my extra yarn in a 12x12 canvas box. Some yarns are in ziplocs to prevent them from unraveling. I have sorted them out into knitting or felting yarns. I have yarns I bought that I don't know what to do with in another bag. I have that at the ready for charity projects. And then I have the rest organized into groups and thicknesses. And another section is set up for wips that need a lot of yarn, but I don't want it all out. It is at the ready for when I need to grab the next skein.

I forgot to mention that the bulk of my stash is stored in a closet. I built wire cubes for storage and put in door shelving on both closet doors. I have organized my yarn based on wips, one day wips, finished projects, and other fiber related crafts.

I'm currently working on moving my craft supplies from a hallway built in/ closet into our home office that will soon be my craft room. It has beautiful built ins but it's just not cheerful enough for me. So not only am I looking of how to store but also decorate this blah looking room. My thoughts are to use my storage baskets, jars, etc, as decor. It's a great way to see what you have on hand and enjoy the beauty of the yarn or fabric you have carefully selected. Being the deal shopper that I am, I'm always on the lookout, no matter where it's at. So far, I've collected a vintage patina copper basin ($10, flea market), a vintage wire basket ($2, thrift store), and some clear glass jars that have a chalkboard label ($3-5, clearance isle at TJMaxx). Somehow they all look great together and are very useful for storing items. I also have some small old glass jars that I've picked up randomly at the flea market like an old shave jar and some blue mason jars for small notions and whatnots. I've also seen these labels online that I'm in love with...
http://www.amazon.com/Chalkboards-Wedding-Place-Favors-Crafts/dp/B0056IH3G0/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1391223785&sr=8-31&keywords=chalkboard+labels

I'm thinking they would look great on jars or baskets for labeling certain fibers like alpaca, cotton, etc.. Not only do I knit but I sew as well. I've learned that Walmart tosses the empty bolts from sold fabric, so I randomly check to see if they have any and collect them when I'm doing my shopping there. I cut them shorter so that they fit on my shelves (luckily the same height as the office shelves) and it's a great way to store and display fabric.

I feel that my biggest challenge will be convincing my husband to get this challenge done before I go into labor, lol!!! I'm 26 weeks along in my pregnancy ;)

I am going through the six challenges again to fine tune my stash. I do wish I had a proper craft room where all of my yarn, books and other stuff could go. I have a room but it is a sun room and no closets or wall space.
